Designed Around the Homeowner's Needs
The homeowners had an extensive cookbook collection and wanted a better way to organize it. Instead of stacking heavy books on fixed shelves where they were difficult to reach, they envisioned a storage system that would bring the entire collection out to them with a simple pull.
Cookbooks may not seem especially heavy at first, but a large collection of hardcover books can place hundreds of pounds of weight on cabinet hardware. Rather than trying to make a standard product work, I designed a pull-out shelf system specifically for the way they planned to use their cabinets.
That's what custom storage is all about—building the solution around the customer instead of asking the customer to adapt to a standard product.
Built for Heavy-Duty Performance
Unlike a standard pull-out shelf, these custom heavy-duty drawers feature 10-inch-tall solid birch sides designed to support large, heavy items and keep them securely in place.
Because of the tremendous amount of weight these shelves would carry, I upgraded every drawer to 200-pound full-extension drawer guides. My standard pull-out shelves use 100-pound guides, which are more than adequate for most kitchens. For this project, however, the additional capacity provides the strength and durability needed for years of dependable performance.
The result is a storage system that operates smoothly even when fully loaded with heavy items.
The Details Matter
One detail you may notice is the integrated hand pulls built directly into each drawer front.
Because these pull-out shelves are installed with very little space between them, traditional cabinet handles would interfere with the drawer above or below. The recessed hand pulls provide a comfortable grip while maintaining the clean appearance of the cabinetry and allowing each drawer to operate independently.
Sometimes it's the smallest details that make a custom project both functional and attractive.
